Electrolysis vs. Laser: Which Is Right for You?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal and works on all skin tones and hair colors. Laser hair removal targets melanin in hair follicles, making it most effective on dark hair with lighter skin. Electrolysis treats individual follicles one at a time, while laser covers larger areas more quickly. Many clients benefit from a combination approach — laser to reduce bulk, followed by electrolysis for complete, permanent removal.

What to Expect During Your First Electrolysis Session

Your first visit begins with a consultation to discuss your goals, medical history, and treatment plan. During the session, a tiny probe is inserted into each hair follicle, and a small current is applied to destroy the growth cells. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild sting or warmth. Sessions typically last 15–60 minutes depending on the area. Consistency is key — regular sessions every 1–2 weeks deliver the best results, with noticeable reduction after 4–8 sessions.

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

Hair grows in three distinct phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Electrolysis and laser are most effective during the anagen phase, when the hair is actively connected to its blood supply. Since only about 20–30% of hairs are in the anagen phase at any given time, multiple sessions are needed to treat all follicles. This is why treatment plans typically span several months for optimal, permanent results.
